I always try to consider what impact my work could have beyond the brief.
Will this piece still be something I am proud of for years to come? Can I use elements of this in future projects, and most importantly, have I learned something new?
For my piece "Half the World Away" I believe I achieved all those things and more. The artwork was created for a Certificate 4 assignment which tasked me with making a mural to be displayed in a bar. I decided to do mine inspired by Picasso's Guernica.
Since its original submission, I entered it into a global art competition. My artwork was 1 of 25 artworks chosen by industry professionals including Hiroshi Fujiwara, David Carson, Daniel Arsham and Stefan Sagmeister.
The artwork ended up coming in 5th place out of hundreds of entries.
It is a comment on how foreign conflict is reacted to by western countries. One moment of condemnation and then it's back to the party. The artwork literarily depicts the moment a war is announced on the other side of the world, the only reference to this conflict being a small TV in the corner.
The news is drowned out in the chaos of fun.
